Bird and bats migration studies

Bird and Bats Migration Studies

Wind farm construction always poses a potential conflict between birds and bats and the wind turbines. Grontmij offers you leading expertise in the highly specialised area of studying and assessing the risks for birds, bats and fauna in relation to wind turbines

Even if wind farms make only a relatively modest contribution to wildlife mortality compared to other anthropogenic activities, the risk of disturbing birds and bats should not be underestimated. Wind turbines may have a massive effect on local wildlife and in some cases place rare or endangered species of international or national importance at risk.

During our long-term participation in building wind farms in Denmark Grontmij has prepared several studies on how birds and bats are affected by wind turbines. Based on our findings and our vast experience from on-shore, “near-shore” and offshore wind-farm projects in Europe and Africa, we are able to help you to prevent that your projects become a threat to biodiversity in the local area.

Access to extensive experience
When you plan a new wind farm Grontmij will help you to prepare baseline and impact studies of birds, bats and their habitats and roosts. You will get access to our extensive experience in designing monitoring programmes and conducting and reporting field work. We will help you to prepare your analyses and all data for your Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

We offer you a highly qualified staff of biologists who have experience in the use of and posses laser-optical, radar and acoustic equipment to collect the relevant data.

We can help you with

  • Mapping of staging and resting populations of birds and bats using aerial, land or ship-based surveys both in baseline studies as well as impact studies (post-construction studies)

  • Baseline studies of the vertical and horizontal distribution of migrating birds and bats to assess potential collisions risks in e.g. your EIA process

  • Post-construction studies of collision rates and vertical and horizontal responses from migrating birds and bats on installed wind turbines

  • Impact assessments

  • Being project holder in formulating monitoring program and preparing tender materials
